Announcement:

The Tennessee Bandmasters Association / ASBDA Summer Symposium is scheduled for June 1 - 3.  Our TBA events will follow directly the Tennessee chapter of ASBDA Young Director's Symposium.  You do NOT have to be a member of ASBDA to attend as this event is for  ALL  DIRECTORS  to interact and share ideas.

https://tnasbda.org/service-events/asbda-mentor-day/

Please be sure to complete the RSVP - it starts with the ASBDA event (June 1), and then the TBA (June 2&3).  The information about the TBA event will be updated soon to reflect the following:

The events scheduled throughout will be a great way to get some fantastic professional development hours geared toward success in your classes when school resumes in the fall.

Our special guest clinician will be Scott Rush.  Check out his bio here

 http://www.giamusic.com/bios/scott-rush

Scott is the author of two highly touted books, Habits of A Successful Band Director and The Evolution of A Successful Band Director for GIA Publications.   He has co-authored five other books for GIA, three method books for band and orchestra entitled Habits of A Successful MusicianHabits of a Successful Middle School Musician and Habits of A Successful String MusicianHabits of A Successful Middle School Band Director, and Quality of Life Habits of a Successful Band Director.

Scott's sessions are energetic, enjoyable and relevant to directors at all levels of experience.

The projected outline for the day will be:

9:00 AM Habits of a Successful Band Director

10:30 AM Habits of a Successful Wind Ensemble

NOON Lunch

2:00 PM Habits of a Successful Middle School Band Director

Rehearsal Lab with demo group (students from Williamson County High School bands)

Directors: Bring your instrument and baton!

3:30 PM Habits of a Significant Band Director

Go back and read the title of the last session again...the first time I read it I thought it would be a recap of the first.  Definitely a difference between Successful and Significant and it should be very enlightening to learn Scott's take on that!

Saturday will be our annual summer forum. We will be looking at issues that impact directors statewide and formulating plans of action to continue making improvements for our directors and students.  Topics include a proposal for updating the adjudication sheets used for solo and ensemble, as we discussed at the TBA meeting during the TMEA Conference.  We also will be discussing the addition of Grade 1 to the Graded Music List and adopting the Color Guard and Percussion sheets to complete our Marching Band Assessment sheets.

Plus whatever you have for the agenda as well...

See YOU there !

Supporters of Music Education in Tennessee,

Thank you for contacting your state senators Wednesday in response to the proposed Senate Bill 631, which, as introduced, would have added social studies requirements to high school graduation requirements with a number of potential negative impacts on arts programs and students’ ability to participate in the arts.

This morning, the Senate made the decision to delay consideration of the bill until next Thursday, April 20. There is a corresponding bill in the House that has now been amended, removing the high school graduation requirement component of the bill and instead focusing on mandating units on Tennessee History in the elementary and middle school curriculum. It is likely that this morning’s delay will allow for the same amendment to be added to Senate Bill 631 prior to its consideration next week.

Your calls and emails on behalf of music students and strong Tennessee music programs yesterday helped to ensure that the bill would not proceed as introduced! TMEA will continue to monitor the bill in advance of its consideration, along with all other pending legislation that may impact access to and support for music education for all K-12 students across the state.

Announcement:

We need TMEA members and those who support music and arts education in our state to make phone calls and send emails TODAY to legislators to oppose House Bill 727 (Rep. Swann) and Senate Bill 631 (Sen. Haile). This bill would require students to take classes in Tennessee history. This would be in addition to the Tennessee history requirements that are already required to be covered in Tennessee’s newly adopted social studies standards. Our concern is that the time required for additional Tennessee history requirements will take away time from non-required subjects like music and the arts.

The Senate Bill is on the Senate Floor Thursday morning (April 13). We need all members to call their Senator to oppose this bill. You can find your State Senator's name and contact information at this link:

http://wapp.capitol.tn.gov/Apps/fml/districts.aspx

You will likely not be able to speak to your Senator, but you should leave this (suggested) message:

“I am a constituent of Senator ______ and I am calling to oppose Senate Bill 631 by Sen. Haile, which is on the Senate floor calendar on Thursday morning. This bill would require Tennessee students to take additional classes in Tennessee history. Tennessee history is already required to be covered in several other parts of Tennessee's social studies standards. This additional Tennessee history requirement is well-meaning, but it will require students to give up time in other subjects like music and the arts.”

Since this bill is under consideration tomorrow morning, we need your voice heard TODAY.  Please take a moment and show your support for music in our schools.  We can do great things for our state's music programs if we work together!

As Concert Festival approaches, please read over the Concert Festival portion of the Constitution to review the procedures and regulations to better prepare you for this event.  Specifically, remember that you need to send a seating chart ready, you need 3 additional ORIGINAL scores with measures numbered for the judges, and that the host school only provides four (4) timpani, bass drum, xylophone, marimba, chimes and vibraphone.

Also, remember the following:  C. All students must be bonafide members of the school's band or orchestra program. The student must also be fully enrolled and attending the same school.

D. A student may perform with students of a higher grade level, but in no instance may a high school student perform in a group below the high school level. F.  In schools with a band and an orchestra program, players are allowed to perform in one of each group (one band and one orchestra). No student will be allowed to perform in more than one band or more than one orchestra. Upon written submission to the WTSBOA Executive Committee, middle school students may additionally perform with the high school band or orchestra as long as the director of both ensembles is the teacher of record of both schools.

Announcement:

The Concert Festival registration deadline has been extended to Feb. 15th to allow members who plan to submit scores for approval, to receive the results of the score approval committee before they submit their program to be performed at Concert Festival.

This also serves as a reminder that the classification of entry is determined by the highest grade of music performed in concert as we discussed during our August 20 membership meeting, e.g. If you play a grade 4 and a grade 3 piece at Concert Festival, you will sight read that which has been designated for grade 4 sight reading.  This is something we apologize for not getting updated on the website sooner.  It will be updated ASAP.  This extension will also allow members to resubmit their concert festival programs if they were unsure of how the sight reading is assigned.
